  Modern Table Pad Construction
Most table pad manufacturers today use a less labor intensive method of table pad construction than the older stacked-cardboard method. Fiber core board is principally used today. The customer's table pattern is used to cut the fiber core board to the exact shape of the table. The board is slotted and vinyl is applied with adhesive over a foil film for heat absorption. The other side of the board is is covered with a flannel or felt material, also with an adhesive. Both vinyl and felt are hand tucked. Each piece of the table pad is then reinforced at the folds. This method produces a table pad that weighs far less than the traditional cardboard method. The fiber core board is therefore also easier for a customer to handle and lift.

Prestige Table Pads uses the newer, lighter fiber core board in its process.

  Classic Table Pad Construction
There are a few table pad manufacturers that still construct their table pads using layers of cardboard stacked together. One stack of cardboard has vinyl applied with adhesives, the second stack of cardboard is covered with a flannel, felt, or velvet flocking type material also applied with adhesives. Both stacks of cardboard are then machine-sewn together. Each table pad is reinforced where it folds in half.

Tables and Table Pads--Nicks and Scratches
Did you know that your jewelry--rings, watches, bracelets--can damage your fine dining room table, even if the table is covered with a table cloth?

Table pads are a small investment compared to the cost of refinishing your furniture. They are inexpensive and effective.

If you don't have a table pad now, start shopping. Table pad manufacturers make them in all shapes and sizes--standard and custom.

Table Pad Heat Protection -- Know the Limits of your Table Pads
Most table pads are made with three basic layers--a vinyl top, a felt bottom, and an insulation layer between. The thickness of the insulation layer determines how much heat protection your table will have. However, note that although your table might be protected, the table pad itself might be ruined by extreme heat. The insulation layer might protect your table from a 500 degree cast iron pan taken right out of the oven, but the vinyl top layer will most probably burn or melt.

Therefore, always place your pots on trivets/hot plates, even if you use a table pad. Table pads protect your table from accidental spills, but are not indestructible themselves.
